Women in STEM- An Outreach Programme for Untapped Resources

STEM is an acronym used for Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics that are the major fields of education. The eminent issue is gender disparity in graduating and joining professions related to STEM. Pakistan is among one of the developing countries where this disparity is highest according to 2020 report of World Economic Forum. Female literacy rate is low, and it is even lower in sciences, engineering and technology. Pakistan, as a developing country, is striving to improve the general economy for which the role and participation of women is very important. Fortunately, the realization of STEM gender gap has led the government and other organizations to step forward to reduce the disparity.

In the line to these efforts, StemWomenPK with collaboration of AlumNode organising its 2nd workshop at FG Postgraduate College for Women, Kashmir Road. StemWomenPk has variegated forum to provide the female role models from various fields for STEM. The purpose is to educate and mentor women through outreach program that will provide sponsorship and networking from female role models in their prominent fields.

Our first workshop, in the series, has been organized at the University of Lahore titled, “Taking a giant Leap for Gender Equality – Emerging Opportunities”. The eminent women from the fields of engineering, technology and industry have been invited to educate female students through their motivational speeches to highlight the importance of female participation in STEM and guide them how to fight the societal biases & discrimination. Moreover, they have shared their experiences in academia and professional life with the audience. The session has aspired female students to take part in STEM, educate them for career choices, and activated alumni to engage and activate industry links with female students.

Now we are launching a mentoring platform for STEM Women in Pakistan. This time we are targeting female students at secondary and higher secondary level. It`s a series of workshops those will be conducted in several school and colleges nationwide.

The theme of current event is normalizing the STEM career for females. The female STEM profession are example of misconceptions;

  • A career in STEM is difficult for women.
  • STEM is not aligned with conventional female roles.
  • Women adopting STEM careers is against the societal norms.

Besides we will provide a Panel discussion with audience for the Topic
